WHAT IS DSL ?

DSL (digital subscriber line) is a proven technology that takes advantage of standard copper telephone lines to provide secure, reliable, high-speed Internet access. Unlike traditional dial-up connections such as analog modems and ISDN, DSL delivers continuous "always on" access. That means multimedia-rich websites, email, and other online applications are immediately available to you, anytime. You can depend on DSL because its proven technology takes full advantage of the existing telecommunications infrastructure. Connection speeds for DSL typically range from 384Kbps to 1.544Mbps downstream and up to 256Kbps upstream. In addition, a DSL line allows for one line to carry both voice and data signals, and for the data part of the line to be continuously connected, so you can talk on your phone line at the same time you're surfing the Internet.

WHY A HOME USER SHOULD CONSIDER DSL INSTEAD OF CABLE

Cable Modem customers should consider DSL instead of cable for a number of reasons. Cable modems are engineered for sharing between 500 and 2,000 users where DSL is a dedicated line service per client. Sharing bandwidth means that during peak hours, speeds slow due to simultaneous usage from other customers, also known as over-subscription. Another downside to sharing bandwidth is the risk of eavesdropping and theft of service. Since DSL is a dedicated (non-shared) medium, these issues do not arise. In addition, cable modems customers must use their local cable company for service and technical support, and in some cases must also purchase cable TV service.

THE ISSUES IN DEPLOYING DSL IN YOUR HOME

Self-install DSL is the current implementation of most DSL service providers. This means the DSL equiptment is shipped to you and you are responsible for installing it. It usually comes in a kit that has the DSL modem and instructions to install it. The kit may also include some filters and splitters to help assist with the install. This type of install is great on price and easy to do for the average home or business owner.

INSIDE WIRING ISSUES

Self install can be difficult if there are any issues with the wiring in you home. The wiring in your home is NOT the responsibility of the DSL provider, or the telephone company. So whom do you go to when it doesn’t go smoothly and becomes a not-so-easy installation? Coker Consulting has the knowledge and experience to evaluate what is wrong and correct any issues you may be having with your Inside Wiring, NID Splitter, DSL Modem, and or other high-speed connection devices.

NID SPLITTERS (PROFESSIONAL INSTALL)

Coker Consulting also installs NID splitters (professional installs) to separate the DSL signal
from the voice line.
This gives you a dedicated connection from the NID to their DSL modem jack inside their home or business.
